If you surf, you know how much surf can transform your mood, but having the perfect combination of before, after and during the surf session you can like any other activity get more and more appreciation, I made a simple list of 5 songs that I used to listen in the entire “script” of surfing. Since I get my board and get straight to the ocean with nothing but my shorts and board until I sit and watch the waves moving.

Of course I had to put Jack Johnson, he’s the myth of this music style, I can’t remember surfing without imagining the rhythm of any of his songs, check it out, consider it a bonus:

Back with the last 2 songs, yes, surf could be well enjoyed with a lil’ bit of indie.

And enjoy it..

I’ve been talking about surf music the whole day, the whole week and mounth, so I had an idea, the best singer of the new surf music style deserve a special post here, on my tumblr and also on my wordpress. I am talking about Jack Johnson.

The first song that I heard by Jack Johnson was “Times Like These” – And I really think that’s the best example of this new style, it’s soft, acoustic guitar and there’s a lot of feeling on the lyrics, basically isn’t just a simple harmony between the chords and lyrics, there’s a real mean in the whole context. The first album of Jack has some epic songs, like “Flake”, “Bubble Toes”. But in the album On and On, Jack made a huge step in his career, with songs like “Taylor”, “Times Like These”, “The Horizon Has Been Defeated”, “Gone”, “Wasting Time”, “Dreams Be Dreams” and “Rodeo Clowns”.

I already said that, a lot of times Jack Johnson is my favorite singer, with no doubt but there’s more about him that I really appreciate, he’s also a surferanother awesome is he was born in Hawaii and still living there, ok, we’re talking about the paradise but with sucess a lot people forget about the essence of life, wich means love, love and love. In 2002 Jack created his own record business, the Brushfire Records, with a special function, represent some surf music singers and also support some surf movies, helping with the soundtrack and directing some of them. In the Brushfire we have artists like Zach Gill, a friend of Jack Johnson from a long time, Mason Jennings, G. Love.

Jack is starting a new tour, he’s going to perform in Byron Bay here in Australia, unfortunatelly I’m not living in Byron so I’ll lost two concerts in my old home. If you want more informations, take a look in Jack Johnson (Official Website).

Music has a impressive power, for a lot people it’s a great tool for inspiration, for another, relax or maybe both of them. I’m used to say that music is everything for me, my motion, my escape.

There’s music in everything in my life, when I’m waking up, when I’m running, going to te beach, in the car, on the bus, taking a shower, I mean, everything. Even when I’m having a lot of problems at work, missing friends, music helps me everytime. I have a favorite style, the surf music one. Like I said on twitter surf music now is a modern thing. Is not just the classic rock ‘n roll style, with instrumental parts only, with a lot of guitar that remind us big waves, someone surfing, classic places to surf like Hawaii.

Now we have a modern style, mixed with the acoustic and the folk style. Of course is not the essence of this music style, but things change and I’m more fan of this style, let’s just say that my personality made this choice, I like to listen songs to relax, if you surf, have a passion to relax, you know what I’m talking about.

Here’s a great singer and songwritter, with a classic surf style but in a acoustic style, Marc have been growing up in career, making a lot of fans around the world and more than that, creating awesome songs.

The lyrics concept is basically is the pure surf, waves, sunset, typical things of a surfer and also a surf fan. I listened all of his songs and there’s no doubt, he has a special talent and that’s why I’m sharing it. He has one album and you can buy it on iTunes, I’ll give you guys the official website, twitter at the end of the post.

Now, talking about the songs – What Marc said about his songs:

The Right Way: I grew up surfing this little spot called Blackie’s in Newport Beach, California. When the west swells filled in this winter-time break, there was no better place to be. There were so many evenings after class where I’d pull up just in time to slide in the water for a few last waves of the day. “The Right Way” reflects on these sessions.

The River: I really wanted to have fun with this song. I wanted to explain my feelings about my new house on the river. This was written just after I moved from Oahu back to Orange County and I couldn’t help but observe the extreme differences (and also similarities) between the two.

Mellow: This song, written while living in Hawaii, was a direct response to the Aloha spirit that the islands brought me. “Mellow” is a tribute to places where relaxation comes easy.

Democracy: Here’s my mockery of our Federal Government set to dub-reggae sounds. I just think it’s hilarious that this country takes pride in Democracy when we clearly have very little control over politics.

Memories: I recorded this song first on the album…it took me less than three hours to record it all, and I was super bummed-out the whole night I was recording, but we kept it because it showed the sense of loneliness I felt at the time.

Me and My Guitar: This track was recorded completely live, in one take. I wanted you to get the feeling you were locked in the little sound booth in the studio with me. If you listen closely, you can hear little imperfections that keep this recording raw and real. It talks about how everything else comes and goes, ebbs and flows, but my guitar is always there for me

Comin’ Up: We had what we thought was a complete studio album e.p. until I jumped back into the studio to record this song at the last minute. I was driving though San Clemente, California when I realized the amount of development that has destroyed the land in just the last 20 years.

Obviously I’m talking about her, Tristan Prettyman. Everytime when I’m listening Tristan I get impressed with her talent, she has a impressive voice and a facility to change her voice, that’s a impressive quality. She’s the queen of surf music style, with no doubts, she has great songs like: “Hello”, “November”, “War out of Peace” and that’s what I’m going to do, search for good covers of Tristan, it will be fun.

Checking some covers of Jack Johnson, John Butler Trio and Tristan Prettyman I saw this dude playing: “Beautiful” (a girl singing too), alright, the video is pretty awesome but I’m talking about him ‘cuz he has surf in hobby and music style. His name: Mike Salisbury, in his youtube channel you can watch him playing songs by; Jimi Hendrix, G Love and another important fact, he’s a songwriter. It’s a great recomendation if you’re a surf lover and a surf music fan – you can download his cd on his website, enjoy it, mahalo.

From San Diego this woman has a beauty voice and a special talent with acoustic guitar. Really great. I’m a great fan, her style it’s just amazing a woman playing in a “surf style” – insane mate. Great songs like: “Madly”, “When it rains”. Tristan made a great duet with Jason Mraz playing “Shy that way”. It’s a great recomendation, check this girl singing, take a look in some important links, mahalo.

Another great singer from Australia.. in my point of view a surf music singer but, people say he’s a blues ‘n roots singer. Xavier has great songs like “Mother”, “Messages” and I’m pretty sure that he’s a surf music singer. Xavier is a songwriter too. Next shows, mahalo.

Jon and Roy playing “A Little Bit Of Love”, they’re in The Drifter soundtrack, not with this song, with “Dt Stylee”.

“Starting with Rob’s epiphany in the surf mecha Bali, you’re confronted with the true essence of Kuta and what we’ve all come to love and hate about the place. It’s here that Machado begins his journey through to one of Indonesia’s outermost reaches with nothing but a surfboard, his journal and a tent. Along the way you meet amazing people and special characters.”

Take a look in the new Jack Johnson’s album, called: “En Concert” – he made a lot of arrangements between classic songs and “new” songs, a little example: “Belle/Banana Pancakes” - he’s a phenomenal singer also a great person. He also played classic like, “Good people”, “Better Together”, “Do you remember”. It’s been over a year since the Sleep Through the Static tour finished up so there was a little bit of rust, a few “once in a lifetime” versions, some requested rarities from the audience and even an attempt to play a new song for the first time.  Looks like we’ll have to wait until the next tour to hear that one.  All in all Jack, Emmett and the whole Santa Barbara hometown crowd had a great night.  And perhaps, most importantly to some, Jack was sporting a new look, more informations:
